The neighbors let us pick apples from their trees on Wednesday. So far, I’ve canned 14 pints of apple pie filling (recipe from my Ball canning cookbook), and there’s still plenty of apples left. I’m thinking of doing applesauce next.

Next week I hope to get some tomatoes canned, but our plants aren’t doing as well this year as they usually do. We’re getting a decent amount of tomatoes, but not enough at one time to can. Hopefully soon.

By the way, if you’re new to canning, I highly recommend the Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving. The instructions are very thorough, and everything we’ve tried out of it has tasted fantastic.

  1. We’re actually not huge pie eaters. But we like it over waffles as an occasional treat and sometimes made into other desserts.

The jars are small enough too that one jar is gone in a meal if the whole family is eating some of it.

That said, I don’t have any specific time frame for us to finish it in. We just have the apples and I thought that would be a good way to use them. Today I’m hoping to make applesauce with the rest of the apples.

    1. ah, thanks for replying. I’m so oblivious when it comes to canning, storing food in bulk. I want to and I know it’ll help our small budget. We do use a lot of applesauce so I can see that. I’ve been trying to stock up on strawberries and make strawberry syrup from scratch! should be interesting.

      1. No problem. My mindset with canning is to get as much put up as I possibly can. If we’re still eating it next summer, no problem.
I’m still pretty new to canning myself. My mother-in-law is a good resource, and she lets me borrow her pressure canner too. I’m thankful.
It really does help the budget. Every little bit does, right?
        And strawberry syrup sounds delicious!

  2. please tell me what do you do with 14 pints of apple pie filling! do you make that many pies over a year’s time? or is that saved for years to come… or do you use it for other recipes too?

  3. I made apple pie filling one year, from a recipe my friend gave me.

I second the book recommendation. It’s a great resource.
