Today's kitchen experiment

This morning as I was cracking quail eggs for breakfast burritos, I started to wonder how they would do as boiled eggs.

Our quail are laying 3-6 eggs a day. That adds up pretty fast, so we’re trying to come up with some creative ideas for using them up since we don’t sell them.

At the moment, there are 5 quail eggs on the stove hard-boiling. They sure would be a conversation starter at a church potluck if they turn out well. “Look at those tiny devilled eggs! How cute!”

We’ll see.

  1. Melody, here in Japan boiled quail eggs are used in stir fry, in soups, in salads, all kinds of dishes. They are used any way that you might use a chicken egg! Have fun with it!

  2. Heather, that’s definitely an idea. I was just thinking of cutting them in half and going from there.

Lori, every other way we’ve used them they taste just like chicken eggs. I expect them to taste the same devilled – just haven’t done anything more to them yet. They’re in a bowl in the frig at the moment.

  3. hmm you could “devil” those whole. Cut the top off and use a sandwich bag to pipe the filling back in the hole then sit them up to serve them lol. I think I saw that on rachel ray with regular eggs

  4. LOL Stephanie! They were a lot easier to peel than I thought they’d be. Yay! That’s my biggest gripe about cracking raw eggs is it’s hard to keep little pieces of shell out of the egg.

Haven’t tried eating one yet, but they look just fine. This experiment is a success.

  5. Mrs. Cindy J. would love them she loves little stuff. With them being little they could be ate in one bite instead of jaming it your mouth lol like a regular size egg. You’ll have to let me know how they turn out.
