This afternoon, we came home from church and discovered that one of our quail chicks had escaped their little box home. It seemed that it was nowhere to be found.
We looked under the couch and chairs in the living room. We really hoped we wouldn’t find it dead somewhere. Stephen went into our room to grab one of the flashlights that he keeps by the bed and saw something moving. It was the chick.
It amazes me how a creature that’s barely two inches high can fall a good three feet, go across the living room, through the kitchen, and around to our room. I’m just glad that we found it. It was cuddled up with a stuffed animal that was laying on the floor.
Needless to say, their box now has a mesh cover over the top!
LOL
Susan, I’ll be on the lookout for her email. That’s terrible that so many were dead – every time we’ve ordered, we’ve had GREAT success with the number of live chicks. She’s welcome to contact us anytime about it.
Carolyn, we were really worried about it, because our heat is out in the house. We didn’t know how long it had been out, so one of our concerns was that it had gotten too cold. It seems to be doing find today though, so that’s good.
Brenda, that was another concern of ours was how big of a mess did it leave. Thankfully, we didn’t find too much, um, evidence laying around!
That is a funny picture-Stephen finding the chick by stuffed toy. I’m glad you found it quickly. They make such a mess when left out and about. I speak from experience.
I can totally picture a baby chick cuddling up with a stuffed animal. Realistically though, it was probably cold w/o the heat lamps…
How funny! They sure are cute, though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen quail chicks before.
My mom just ordered 30-something chicks from somewhere, and when they arrived, a lot of them were dead or dying. The company is replacing some of them. I told her about your blog and sent her the link. She may be contacting you by email – they live in upstate SC.
