Every year, I mix up a big batch of hot cocoa mix to enjoy throughout the winter. This year, I couldn’t find the recipe I used to use. This time, instead of searching for a recipe, I made up a cup of hot cocoa from scratch, and then did the math to make a big batch of it.
The nice thing about this recipe is that it calls for basic ingredients. Some recipes I’ve seen call for chocolate milk mix (like Nestle’s Quik) – but that’s more of a luxury item in our household. I do, however, usually have cocoa, so that’s where I started.
Here’s the final recipe. We love it!
Hot Cocoa Mix
2 2/3 cups dry milk powder
3/4 cup baking cocoa
1 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup granulated (white) sugar
Generous pinch of salt
Mix all together and store in an airtight container.
To make one cup of hot cocoa, stir 2 Tbsp of mix into 6-8 oz hot water.
It will dissolve better if you mix it all in a blender or food processor, but it’s not absolutely necessary.
This isn’t overly sweet, so you may want to increase the white sugar some. You don’t have to use the powdered sugar, but I did because I had so much of it in the house that wasn’t getting used. If you use all granulated sugar, taste test it before you add it all to make sure you like how it tastes.
I’m still working on a sugar-free mix recipe using Splenda, but I don’t have one yet. I know you’re supposed to be able to substitute it one-for-one with white sugar, but I just haven’t tried it in this recipe yet.
Tomorrow morning I will be mixing up several batches of the mix. . . Our church is having a Halloween outreach tomorrow, so that’s why I’m making this with real sugar. :O) We set out a table in front of the church, and parents can stop by to get a warm drink and use the facilities. The church is located directly in the center of the main streets that are used for trick-or-treating, so we take advantage of the opportunity to witness and pass out tracts.
