A new song for worship service

Quite a while ago, while I was playing around on the piano one evening, I was thinking and praying about a sermon that I had heard earlier that night. The more I played, the more and more I kept coming back to the same melody. The Lord laid a new song on my heart that night, that I later named “Lord, Teach Me to Pray.”

All I wrote that evening was the chorus. I knew it needed more, and I even knew how the melody would go, but I just didn’t have words for it. They simply weren’t there. I put the song aside and didn’t think more of it for a while.

Then one day, I sat down with it again, and prayed that God would give me the words to finish out the rest of the song. He did. Stephen and I began singing it at our church. The timing was so neat – we began singing it right around the time that our church began the One Hour Watchers program.

We moved here to IN, and the song remained in our notebook of music that we use for solos, although we hadn’t used it yet here. I remarked to Stephen last night that the song has been in my mind lately. He asked me if I would mind if we used the song in the worship service – as a praise song for the congregation to sing. I was pretty suprised. He had me type the words up and we left for church.

I cannot begin to describe how it felt to hear our congregation singing a song that I wrote. Sometimes you can just hear a congregation worship. . .that’s one of the things I love about being a church pianist. . .it’s such a great vantage point to hear the congregation sing. And last night, they were worshipping. With a song that God gave me. It was amazing. Wonderful, and yet, truly humbling. It was an incredible blessing to hear something that God gave me being used as a blessing to others.

Spread the love
